My Sister’s Dead…Haha

My Sister’s Dead…Haha was written by Gabrielle Banville through Playwright’s Workshop Montréal’s 2023-2024 Young Creator’s Unit. Up to that point, Gabrielle had both written and performed her scripts. This time, she wanted to give the opportunity for other emerging artists to bring the script to life, while also taking more space to delve into the world of the play. My Sister’s Dead…Haha was performed at the 2024 Montréal Fringe Festival at Studio Multimédia by Sofia Dancea and Clarisse Bell, two emerging Montréal actors.

‘Briar and May are navigating life right after the loss of their sister, June. After discovering their sister had left a voice note before her death, Briar and May attempt to tackle June’s requests, such as living together in her condo, fostering her diabetic cat Bacon, and putting her ashes in a teapot. This dramedy asks the question few of us want to ponder; what happens when our sibling dies and leaves us too soon?’

After completing her time at the Young Creator’s Unit, Gabrielle was selected for Playwright’s Workshop Montréal’s 2025 Queer Reading Series, in partnership with Centaur Theatre. This program showcases two emerging queer playwrights, and provides them with the resources and space to continue the development of their plays. A reading of My Sister’s Dead…Haha will be held at the end of April 2025, alongside Gabrielle’s fellow YCU alumni Anton May’s play.

Most recently, My Sister’s Dead…Haha was shortlisted at Infinithéâtre’s Write-on-Q 2024, an annual Québec-wide playwriting competition which celebrates innovative new works by Québec playwrights.

Exhilarating and memorable… poignant moments of loss are seamlessly intertwined with bursts of humour and whimsical touches… a beautiful blend of sisterhood, pain and a chuckle here and there…”

-Yaël Tobon, Forget The Box

“Sofia Dancea and Clarisse Bell absolutely BRING IT...Grief and sisterhood are often depicted in linear, predictable ways… but Gabrielle Banville’s script treats them with the complexity they deserve.”

-Rob Teszka, established Fringe artist
