Our Mandate

Half Twin Theatre acknowledges that we create, rehearse and present our shows on the unceded lands of Tiohtiá:ke, now known as Montréal, which has been a site of creativity, exchange and meeting amongst many First Nations including the Kanien’kehá:ka of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Huron/Wendat, the Abenaki, and the Anishinaabeg. We are thankful for the opportunity to share stories on these lands rich with life and culture, and we welcome collaboration and dialogue to further break down the barriers that face indigenous peoples today.

We tell the stories of forgotten women. As a company composed of women, queer and trans folk, we amplify the voices of the women who’ve been abandoned or ignored across communities. We give our stage to the women who suffer just outside of people’s scopes, who represent the other half of the harsh yet often prevalent events found across women’s lives. Our plays illustrate how our connected lived experiences can bring us together, whether it be through our laughter or tears.

Our works have shone a light on these forgotten women by experimenting with non chronological and overlapping storylines, the memory of music, and the dualities of womanhood. To intensify these explorations, we primarily produce solo and two-hander plays, both in English and bilingually. We prioritize working with emerging and underrepresented Montréal artists who may benefit from our collaborative creation process, our platform, and our resources.

We give our community the room to be heard, both onstage and off; moving forward in our artistic initiatives, we will be donating a portion of our earnings to organizations and charities that represent the values and themes of our shows.

In our design process, we have primarily used thrifted or recycled materials to create our sets, costumes and props. We also reuse our previous productions pieces when we can, and redonate the rest to equitable thrift stores and charities. It is important that not only do our productions look and feel fantastic, but that they leave a less impactful carbon footprint.

We give our community the room to be heard, both onstage and off; moving forward in our artistic initiatives, we will be donating a portion of our earnings to organizations and charities that represent the values and themes found within our shows.
